How fast is the growth of sleep apnea treatment (mainly via CPAP)?
April 12th, 2011
I’m trying to figure out how many people are buying CPAP systems and masks today and how much this is changing.
I see number like 18M people have OSA (up to 50-60M with some type of sleep issue), and the industry is growing at 8.4%, but what’s driving this? Increase diagnosis & treatment, shift demographics, more marginal suffers seeking treatment, or just newer, more expensive equipment?
Any help would be great. Cited sources would be even better!! Thanks!!
Sleep Apnea effects more than 12 million Americans! More over weight people and diabetics have sleep apnea. It usually effects men over 40 who are over weight. There are 3 types of Sleep Apnea:
1.) Obstructive…soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses and closes during sleep.
2.) Central…The brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe.
3.) Mixed…Combination of both of the
above.
You can learn more on the American Sleep Apnea Association website:

This whole nation is over weight or diabetic so go figure why everyone has sleep apnea!
Being over weight is the norm now.

I hated wearing a CPAP, I gave it back lol. Its ok to stop breathing when you sleep 😉 The only reason I agreed to Sleep-Over Studies was because the nurses were hott. I’d sleep over them anytime.

I suffer from sleep apnea and use a CPAP machine, so your question caught my eye.
You could try the website of the American Sleep Apnea Association: http://www.sleepapnea.org/ . It has links to information resources that may be useful. You could also try posting your question on their forum. There is also a forum at http://www.apneasupport.org .

Sorry, I’m too lazy to search for sources right now, but the increased diagnosis of OSA (and the increased prescribing of CPAP or BiPAP, the primary treatment) is both related to increased vigilence and recognition, as well as the increasing obesity rates among developed countries in general. One of the main risk factors for developing OSA is being overweight/obese and given that the weight issues of this country don’t appear to be improving any time soon, the rate of diagnosis will probably continue to rise.
