How much does uninsured sleep apnea treatment cost?

January 30th, 2011

I KNOW THAT YOU DO NOT WANT TO HEAR THIS:

>>>>>> BUT YOU NEED TO READ ALL THESE ANSWERS !!!!<<<<<<<

I HAD INSURANCE !!! BUT DID NOT GET PROPER SLEEP TREATMENT UNTIL LAST YEAR. I AM NOW 61 YEARS OLD AND I SWEAR TO GOD I FEEL LIKE I HAVE REGAINED BACK OVER 40 YEARS OF MY LIFE!

I APPARENTLY NEVER KNEW WHAT SLEEP WAS!

DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO GO TO A SLEEP CLINIC, BEG WHATEVER YOU CAN IF YOU HAVE APNEA, AND YOU GET A CPAP YOU WILL SHORTLY BE A NEW YOU!!!

FOLLOW THE DOCTORS DIRECTIONS ORDERS, AND ALL SORTS OF WONDERFUL THINGS WILL HAPPEN!

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT A CPAP COMPANY HAS A PROGRAM, MY DAUGHTER IS ON A MEDICAL PLAN FROM THE MANUFACTURER FOR FREE AS SHE DOES MOSTLY CHARITY WORK FOR OTHERS. ONLY A DOCTOR WILL KNOW THIS, OR SALESMAN OF A CPAP MACHINE , AT ANY RATE IT WOULD CENTER AROUND A CLINIC.

I AM POSITIVE THAT THE CLINIC WILL WORK OUT SOMETHING REASONABLE. BUT THE RETAIL COST OF THE MACHINE IS $2000.00 AND THAT OVERNIGHT STAY CAN COST JUST ABOUT WHATEVER THEY WANT IT TO. IF A PERSON HAS INSURANCE THEY MAKE IT 2 NIGHTS AND A TOTAL COST OF SAY $15,000.00+ TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY FOR THE CLINIC. WITHOUT INSURANCE THEY CAN DO IT IN ONE NIGHT AT A COST OF FROM NOTHING TO SOME NOMINAL FEE PAID OVER TIME WORKED OUT AHEAD OF TIME.

MAIN THING IS SEE A DOCTOR WITH A CLINIC AS SOON AS POSSIBLE FOR ADVISE! IT WILL BE THE BEST THING YOU WILL EVER DO FOR YOURSELF!

JUST ASK AT THE CLINIC NEAREST YOU!

I SWEAR YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT! AND IF YOU ARE MARRIED, AND OLDER I KNOW YOUR WIFE WILL GET THE POINT!

GOOD LUCK AND GOOD DREAMS,

APS

The cpap is about $700 bucks (after insurance).

My mother, myself and my husband all suffer from this ailment. I stop breathing an average of 200 times a night. It cost me around $4500 to get the whole sleep test done and my share wasn’t too bad but I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t have insurance.

Here are some ideas for you.
Treatment options for snoring and sleep apnea:

    Weight reduction

Avoidance of alcoholic beverages, especially before retiring

Nasal CPAP, in which an appliance forces air at positive pressure into the patient’s airway during sleep.

For many patients, this works extremely well and invasive procedures can be avoided. However, many patients cannot tolerate it and seek other treatments.

If a patient cannot tolerate the various masks used with nasal CPAP, a trial using nasal pillows is suggested. For many patients, this seems to be much more comfortable than the masks.

Occasionally, for effective use of nasal CPAP and to improve the nasal airways, surgical straightening of the septum (middle structure) of the nose is necessary.

If nasal dryness and/or bleeding occur with the use of nasal CPAP, applying saline nasal gel inthe nostrils prior to using the device may prevent these problems.

Diathermy palatal reduction (office procedure effective for both snoring and mild-to-moderate sleep apnea) (OW! about a grand)

Surgically straightening the septum (middle part) of the nose. This usually works well for snoring, and it may be part of the recommended treatment for sleep apnea. Also, it may help the patient better tolerate nasal CPAP. (averages $8G)

Removing the tonsils and/or adenoids if enlarged (national average about 7G

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (removing the uvula and part of the palate, or back part of the roof of the mouth. My mother had this done, $20G+ and I don’t reccomend it. PAINFUL!)

"Snoreplasty" or injection of sclerosing agents into the palate (for snoring only, around $125 a shot)

Implants of struts into soft palate; Pillar™ palatal implants (about $400)

Laser palatal reduction (for snoring only, runs an average of 3G)

Various dental devices or major surgery on the jaw bones (usually for snoring only and way too expencive)

One method of treatment is not the answer for all patients with snoring and/or sleep apnea, and more than one treatment modality may be required.

Alot. Find a job with insurance because you need to go into over night sleep study for a true case evaluation.

Pressure your doctor to find a provider willing to donate or provide the service for free. In oxygen and DME fields sales representatives will have some allowance to provide free equipment.

The CPAP machine is currently the most widely accepted treatment for apnea. The cost can range from $500 to $2000. This does not include the necessary sleep study to determine the setting of the machine which can be an additional $2000. Try your county hospital for free treatment. If your condition is life threatening (as mine was), you may be able to get everything subsidized. Good luck……..it’s a real bear having apnea.
